Luciano Vranich's Artist Statement

The Gospel story of Christmas has undergone a number of changes from its conception to become the Nativity scene established by St Francis of Assisi.

The rise of the jolly fat man who goes out at night and gives presents to children is another transformation of St Nicholas and the story immortalised in Charles Dickens’ Christmas story.

Since the Industrial Revolution we have seen the rise of consumerism fuelled by advertising enticing as to buy all sorts of goods. The advertising has become the complement to the Christmas story and in some respects has become more important to the city life prior to Christmas day.

This essay looks at the advertising where the representation has gone from the sacred to the secular.
